A direct cremation plan is designed to cover the main costs of the cremation. This usually includes the cremation fee itself, as well as funeral director services such as collecting and caring for the person who has died, completing the cremation paperwork, booking the crematorium and supporting the family.

Plans vary between providers, so it is important to check exactly what is included before you buy.

What is a direct cremation?

A direct cremation is intentionally simple. It doesn’t include a funeral service at the crematorium or the traditional elements that often come with one, such as a hearse, limousines or flowers.

For some families, that simplicity is exactly the point. They don’t want all the formality and fuss of a traditional funeral. Instead, they prefer to remember the person in their own way, with a memorial or gathering at a time and place that feels right for them, separate from the cremation itself.

What does a direct cremation plan include?

Memoria Direct Cremation’s plan is rated 5 stars by Fairer Finance and is the lowest priced top-rated direct cremation plan in the UK. It is fully inclusive, meaning there are no additional charges for your loved ones to pay when the time comes.

If you are not sure what a direct cremation involves, our guide to what happens at a direct cremation walks through the full process from collection of the deceased to the return of ashes.

Our prepaid direct cremation plan costs £1,595 and includes:

  • Funeral director’s fees and cremation fees. These are all covered by the plan price, along with the crematorium’s own fee. Once the plan is paid for, those costs are taken care of, so your family is not left working out who to pay and when.
  • Collection of your loved one from anywhere in mainland UK. Whether that is at home, in hospital, in a hospice or in a care home, we will bring them into our care.
  • Professional care in a mortuary. Your loved one is looked after in a dedicated mortuary until the day of the cremation, cared for by our experienced team the whole time they are with us.
  • A quality wood coffin, including larger sizes at no extra charge. Families often ask whether an affordable cremation means a basic or cardboard coffin. With our plan, your loved one is placed in a proper wooden coffin, whatever size is needed, and the price stays the same.
  • Removal of pacemakers if needed. A pacemaker or similar battery-powered implant has to be removed before a cremation can go ahead, for safety reasons. If your loved one has one, we take care of it as part of the plan and there is nothing extra to pay. You do not need to arrange anything yourself.
  • The cremation itself, carried out at a Memoria crematorium or a chosen partner site. A direct cremation is unattended, which means there is no service and no mourners present on the day. It is carried out with the same care and dignity as any other cremation.
  • Support with funeral arrangements and paperwork. There is more to sort out after a death than most people expect, from registering it to completing the cremation forms. You can call us whenever something is not clear, and we have specialist family support available.
  • An online funeral notice for friends and family. We will set up a notice that you can share with everyone who would want to know.
  • Hand delivery of ashes. When you are ready, the ashes can be hand delivered to you or scattered in our memorial gardens. It is entirely your choice, and there is no rush to decide.
  • FSCS protection. When you buy a Memoria Direct Cremation plan, your money is placed into an FCA regulated insurance policy held in your name. It is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) and the policy is only paid out when it is needed. Find out more about how your funeral plan is protected.

What is not included in a direct cremation plan?

A direct cremation is the simplest kind of funeral, and part of what keeps it affordable is that it leaves some things out. It helps to know what those are before you decide, so there is nothing unexpected for your family later on.

  • A funeral service or attendance. The cremation takes place privately, with no ceremony at the crematorium and nobody there on the day. Many families choose to come together somewhere that means something to them instead, whenever they feel ready.
  • Viewing your loved one. There is no visit to see the person who has passed away beforehand, and they are not embalmed. This is one of the harder things to weigh up, so it is worth talking it through with your family before you decide.
  • Choice of crematorium. We take care of where and when, using one of our own crematoria or one of our chosen partner sites.
  • Flowers, a hearse, or a limousine. As there is no procession and no service, these are not part of a direct cremation. If having flowers feels important, many families have them at a memorial later instead.

If a direct cremation is not what you had in mind

A direct cremation may not be the right choice for everyone. If having people together on the day matters to you, there are attended options that give family and friends the chance to come together and say goodbye.

Memoria Direct Cremation is part of the Memoria Group, one of the UK’s largest funeral services and cremation providers. Through Memoria Funerals, we offer attended funeral plan options too.

From simple, low-key services to more personalised gatherings that can be as elaborate or traditional as you choose.

  • Personal Funeral Plan. A funeral service at a crematorium of your choosing, held in the morning, a smaller affair for close family and friends to say goodbye.
  • Celebration of Life Plan. An attended service that can be held at whatever time suits the people coming, rather than restricted to the morning.
