How Direct Cremation works

Arranging a direct cremation with Memoria Direct Cremation is simple, dignified and straightforward.

We take care of the arrangements, from collection to cremation and the safe return or scattering of ashes, so you can focus on remembering your loved one in your own way.

If you are considering a prepaid funeral plan, then this information will be relevant for your loved ones when the time comes to redeem the plan.

Whether you need our help right now or are planning ahead, our caring team is here to guide you through every step.

Step 1: Contact our team

If someone has died, simply call us on 0800 007 3921.

Our experienced team is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to answer your questions and help you start the process.

We’ll talk through what you need, explain how direct cremation works, and ensure every detail is handled with care and professionalism. If the deceased already has a prepaid direct cremation plan in place, then we will explain how that works.

Step 2: Collection and care

Once arrangements are confirmed, we’ll collect your loved one from their place of rest, whether that’s a hospital, care home, or private residence — anywhere in mainland UK.

They’ll be taken into our care at one of our centres, where our trained staff look after your loved one and prepare the body for cremation with respect and dignity, following the highest professional standards.

Step 3: Cremation

The cremation will take place at one of our award-winning Memoria crematoria across mainland UK. Direct cremations normally take place at sunrise or sunset when the crematoria aren’t busy with people, they tend to be the most peaceful times.

On the day of the cremation, your loved one will be transferred in a private ambulance from our care centre to the crematorium. Where it isn’t practical to use one of our own sites, we work with a carefully selected partner crematorium that upholds the same high standards of care.

Each cremation is individual, private and carried out by trained professionals. While family and friends don’t attend, we will let you know where and when the cremation is taking place so you can have your own moment to remember.

And while there’s no service, rest assured every cremation is carried out to the highest standard of care with the utmost dignity, with our chapel attendant bowing a goodbye to every single coffin.

Step 4: Return or scattering of ashes

Following the cremation, the ashes are carefully collected and handled with respect.

You can choose to:

  • Have the ashes hand-delivered to your home by one of our trusted Memoria delivery specialists.
  • Have them scattered in the crematorium’s garden of remembrance.

If you choose delivery, our representative will confirm your details, hand over the ashes securely, and provide a certificate of cremation for your records.
