What to do when someone dies

What happens next

The steps you need to take will depend on where the death occurred. Our experienced team can advise you at every stage and liaise directly with hospitals, care homes or coroners when needed.

If the death occurred at home

If your loved one has passed away at home, call their GP or the NHS helpline (by dialling 111) to notify them. Once a medical professional has confirmed the death, you can contact us to bring your loved one into our care.

Our team will arrange collection promptly and with the utmost respect.

If the death occurred in a hospital

Hospitals have mortuary facilities, so there is no immediate rush to make arrangements. When you’re ready, contact us and we’ll coordinate directly with the hospital to arrange collection and complete the required paperwork on your behalf.

If the death occurred in a care home

The care home will usually contact the GP to confirm the death. Once this has been done, you can call us, and we’ll arrange for your loved one to be collected and cared for in our own professional facilities or local partner facilities.

Please note that due to different regulations in Scotland, we are not able to complete paperwork on behalf of families whose loved one resides there.

Arranging a direct cremation

We specialise in direct cremation – a simple, unattended cremation carried out with care and dignity. Everything can be arranged over the phone with our supportive team, without needing to visit a funeral home.

Our service can include:

There is no service or attendance, but every cremation is carried out with professionalism and respect.

This simple approach allows families to say goodbye in their own way, without unnecessary cost or formality.

Before arranging a cremation

Our team will guide you through each decision and make sure every detail is handled simply and respectfully.

Return of ashes

When the cremation has taken place, we’ll contact you to confirm how you’d like the ashes returned.

Hand-delivered to your home

Have the ashes hand-delivered to your home by our experienced ashes delivery experts.

Collection from partner locations

Collect them from one of our partner locations at a time that suits you.

Scattered at crematorium

Have them scattered in the crematorium’s gardens of remembrance.

Every return is handled personally, with care, respect and attention to detail. If the ashes are hand-delivered, our ashes delivery experts will arrive at the agreed time, introduce themselves, and ask you to sign a simple receipt. A certificate of cremation will also be included.

Our nationwide delivery service

For families across mainland UK, our fully accompanied service ensures your loved one’s ashes are always in safe hands. From collection to delivery, your loved one remains in our care. We also provide the name of our ashes delivery expert responsible for transporting the ashes, giving you complete peace of mind.
